Dear DaaS User,

Ever wondered why your DaaS needs to be restarted or "rebooted?"  You might be used to rebooting your workstation regularly to update it or fix performance issues.  Surprisingly, many users don't realize the same process is good for the hosted desktop too.  Here's why:

Cleaning Up the Current State

A restart of the Operating System (Windows, in the case of DaaS) helps clear out issues that occur both in Windows and software that you're running.  Many times, as software stays open longer, it consumes more resources.  This can be the result of intense utilization or poor programming (the geeks call these deficiencies "leaks").  While it's possible to play IT sleuth and hunt for offending programs, restarting freshens things up to run better again with little effort and time.

Updating Software

Windows is unable to overwrite certain files while they are in use.  The Operating System and certain programs need restarts to get the latest security and performance enhancements.  Typically, you will receive a warning from Windows or a particular program that a reboot is required.  It's best to follow those prompts.

Many times, the helpdesk will receive calls asking why a reboot of the computer failed to fix a hung application or other performance issue.  It's important to distinguish between your local computer and DaaS.  Restarting the local computer will have no effect on programs running within DaaS because they are two separate computers.

Restating your DaaS is easy.  Click on the Windows icon (usually located in the lower left) and then click on the image of a power button (the first icon up from the bottom).  Select the Restart option.

That's it.  You're on your way to helping improve your DaaS experience and system productivity.
