After the Avamar 7.2 Client has been installed and activated (X Avamar Agent Activation 7.2), if the client is an Exchange Server and the customer requires the database to backed up, the following instructions must be followed or the backup will fail to initiate (file level will still work, but Exchange VSS will fail).
The plugin will require that either an Exchange Admin to be assigned to the log on permissions for the "Backup Agent" service or that the below completed for creating and configuring a new account for service log on.
Manually Creating and Configuring the AvamarBackupUser Account Procedure:
- Log in to the domain controller as an administrator, and create a user account with the settings below
- The recommended name for the account is AvamarBackupUser. The password for the account must comply with domain password policy settings. Otherwise, activation of the mailbox fails. Typically the domain administrator sets the password policy by using Group Policy at the domain level. The password for the account should never expire.
- Add the account as a member of the following groups:(Exchange Server 2013 or 2010)
- Avamar Roles
- Domain Users
- Exchange Servers
- Exchange Trusted Subsystem - Avamar Roles must be created manually if the Avamar Backup User is manually created. Assign the following roles to the Avamar Roles group:
- Database Copies
- Databases
- Disaster Recovery
- Mail Recipient Creation
- Mail Recipients
- View-Only Configuration
- View-Only Recipients - Log in to the Exchange server as an administrator (In an Exchange Server 2013 or 2010 DAG, log in to any server. In an Exchange Server 2007 cluster, log in to an active node)
- From the Exchange Management Console, create an AvamarBackupUser mailbox that uses the default settings. The mailbox must not be hidden from Exchange address lists. Add FullAccess permission to the AvamarBackupUser account in the Exchange Management Shell by typing the following command on a single command line:
get-exchangeserver -identity 'Exchange-server'|add-adpermissionuser avamarbackupuser -ExtendedRights Receive-As,Send-As
(where Exchange-server is the name of the Exchange server.) - Activate the AvamarBackupUser Exchange server mailbox by using one of the following methods:
- Access the AvamarBackupUser mailbox with an Outlook email client
- Send a test email message to the AvamarBackupUser email account - On all servers in the environment with the Exchange VSS plug-in, configure the Backup Agent service to run as AvamarBackupUser:
a. Log in to the Exchange server as AvamarBackupUser.
b. Open the Windows Services console.
c. Right-click the Backup Agent service and select Properties. The Backup Agent Properties dialog box appears.
d. Click the Logon tab.
e. Select This account.
f. Type the AvamarBackupUser account name in the This account box. If there is more than one Active Directory domain, then type the username with the syntax domain\account , where domain is the Active Directory domain for the AvamarBackupUser user account, and account is the name of the AvamarBackupUser account.
g. Type the password for the AvamarBackupUser account in the Password and Confirm Password text boxes.
h. Click OK.
