A Dataset in Avamar can be defined as the dictation of what data will be backed up from a protected client.
? Datasets can backup entire file systems for a variety of Operating Systems (Windows, Mac, Linux, etc.)
? System States (VSS) can be backed up for a variety of specialty servers such as Exchange and SQL
? File-based servers can have their VSS backed up as well
? Paths of Datasets must be configured identically as they appear on the client device, one typo could prevent an entire group from being backed up. Double check, even triple check the spelling of a path.
? Datasets can also have exceptions for uniquely tailored backups (Example: Customer want all of C:/ to be backed up on their Windows 2008 server, but does not require the C:/windows path. Instead of adding every single folder in C:/, you could add C:/ and exclude C:/windows)
? If a Dataset point to certain path, all content the belongs to that path (sub-folders) will be included in the backup. This means Windows File System C:/Users will backup every bit of data that lives in C:/Users

Step-by-step guide

  1. On the Avamar Administrator Opening Window; click “Tools” and select “Manage Datasets” (See image #1)
  2.  Select the customer domain where the Dataset will be created and afterwards select “New” (See image #2)
  3.  Prepping the Dataset
       ? Name the Dataset
? Remove the dataset defaults under “Source Data” (to do this, select "Enter Explicitly", select the paths in the bottom window starting with All local AIX file systems and then select the "-" button. Do this for each explicitly)
? This process is done for every new dataset
  4.  Choose the appropriate “Plug-In Type” that will being backed up. For the purpose of this training, we will be using Microsoft Windows Server 2008 client that has no special roles established (File System). (See image #3)
  5.  At this time we can perform one of two actions to add Windows-based File System to the Dataset. Clicking on the “+” button will add ALL Windows-based File System Data to the Dataset. The other action that can be performed is clicking the radio button “Select Files and/or Folders” to add specific paths if all data is not needed.
  6.  For the action “Select Files and/or Folders”, the path would need to be typed into the text field next to the radio button, once the path has been entered, click on the “+” button. The path is now added to the Dataset. For multiple paths, you would continue to add them one at a time. If a VSS needs to be added to the Dataset, Click on the “Plug-In Type” drop down box and select the appropriate VSS needed. Once all data that will be backed up for the client(s) has been added to the dataset, Click OK. (See image #4)

       7.   Creating an Exclusion in the Dataset is handled in identical fashion as adding a path to the Dataset. While editing the Dataset, select the “Exclusions” tab, the proper “Plug-In Type” and type the path that will be excluded from the backup. Afterwards, click on the “+” button. When you are finished editing the Dataset, Click “OK”.

       8.   Now that our Dataset is complete we can add it to a Group. Navigate to the Group where the Dataset will be applied. Open the Group and select the “Dataset” tab. Open the dropdown box and select the Dataset that will be applied to the Group. To finalize, click “OK”. The Group now has a Dataset! All clients that are members of  this Group will now have the C:\FOLDER\FILE.EXT and the System State backed up.

(NOTE: A Dataset can only be added to a group so long as they are both part of the same domain.)
