This article will cover restoring files to the same location or a directed restore to a different path and/or different client.

For a file restore to be able to occur, a backup must be available to pull the file from. If no completed backups are available, it is not possible to perform a restore with Avamar. Restoring files in Avamar can be done in a variety of ways from taking an entire machine’s backup and directing the files to a different client (with an activated agent) to restoring a single file.

NOTE: To restore to a client, it must have an activated Avamar Agent running on the box.

Step-by-step guide for Restore

  1. To begin the restoration process, open Avamar and select “Backup & Restore”
  2. Select “Select for Restore” tab.
  3. Select the customer domain where the client is present
  4. Select the Client that has the backup that will be getting restored
  5. Select the date for when the backup was created (yellow circles on a date represent that a backup is available for the client)
  6. Select which backup will be getting used for the date you have selected (In this field if multiple plug-ins are being backed up, this is where each one will be distinguished; file system, VSS, etc.)
  7. This window will show what data was backed up that meets all of the above selected criteria and will be where we can browse to what data will need to be restored
  8.  Browse to the file or files that need to be restored. Keep in mind if you select a folder for restore, all of its contents (including sub-folders and their contents) will be restored.
  9.  Once the file(s) have been selected; right-click on any of the selected files and select “Restore Now”
NOTE: Always get the specific path from the customer. Shared/mapped drives are not true paths and will not appear as option to be restored. For example; the client has mapped a drive called G:\ which really points to D:\company\. If the customer requests for J:\accounts to be restored, this would actually exist as D:\Company\accounts. NEVER restore a file if you cannot find it by the path a customer provided.)
